INVITED SPEAKER 5 - Understanding the Dynamics of Lead Soaps in Oil Paintings

Silvia A. Centeno is currently a Research Scientist in Department of Scientific Research (DSR) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA), in New York, where her main responsibilities include the investigation of the material aspects of works of art, with a focus on paintings, works of art on paper, and photographs.  Since 2012, she has been working with a team of scientists at the MMA, the University of Delaware, and at other institutions, in the project ‘Structure and Dynamics of Metal Soap Aggregates at the Pigment/Binder Interface. A Multinuclear Solid-State NMR Study for Understanding Aging and Degradation Processes in Cultural Heritage Objects,’ funded by the US National Science Foundation. Silvia received a PhD in Chemistry from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, and started at the MMA as an L.W. Frohlich Fellow in the Objects Conservation Department to study unusual gilding techniques in Precolumbian metalwork.
